Luke 18 (NASB)
1. Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart,2 saying, In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man.3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, Give me legal protection from my opponent.4 For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, Even though I do not fear God nor respect man,5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge said;7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?9 And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.11 The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.12 I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.13 But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, the sinner!14 I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.15 And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them.16 But Jesus called for them, saying, Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.17 Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.18 A ruler questioned Him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?19 And Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.20 You know the commandments, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.21 And he said, All these things I have kept from my youth.22 When Jesus heard this, He said to him, One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.24 And Jesus looked at him and said, How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.26 They who heard it said, Then who can be saved?27 But He said, The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.28 Peter said, Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.29 And He said to them, Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,30 who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.31 Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.32 For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon,33 and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again.34 But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.35 As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging.36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was.37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.38 And he called out, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!39 Those who led the way were sternly telling him to be quiet; but he kept crying out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me!40 And Jesus stopped and commanded that he be brought to Him; and when he came near, He questioned him,41 What do you want Me to do for you? And he said, Lord, I want to regain my sight!42 And Jesus said to him, Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.43 Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him, glorifying God; and when all the people saw it, they gave praise to God.
Matthew 18 (NASB)
1. At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them,3 and said, Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.4 Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.5 And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me;6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.7 Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire.9 If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.10 See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven.11 [For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.]12 What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying?13 If it turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray.14 So it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.15 If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.16 But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED.17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.18 Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.19 Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.20 For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.21 Then Peter came and said to Him, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?22 Jesus said to him, I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.23 For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.24 When he had begun to settle them, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him.25 But since he did not have the means to repay, his lord commanded him to be sold, along with his wife and children and all that he had, and repayment to be made.26 So the slave fell to the ground and prostrated himself before him, saying, Have patience with me and I will repay you everything.27 And the lord of that slave felt compassion and released him and forgave him the debt.28 But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and he seized him and began to choke him, saying, Pay back what you owe.29 So his fellow slave fell to the ground and began to plead with him, saying, Have patience with me and I will repay you.30 But he was unwilling and went and threw him in prison until he should pay back what was owed.31 So when his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were deeply grieved and came and reported to their lord all that had happened.32 Then summoning him, his lord said to him, You wicked slave, I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.33 Should you not also have had mercy on your fellow slave, in the same way that I had mercy on you?34 And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him.35 My heavenly Father will also do the same to you, if each of you does not forgive his brother from your heart.
