"The Chickens Have Come Home to Roost"
Mark 10 (NASB)
1 Getting up, He went from there to the region of Judea and beyond the Jordan; crowds gathered around Him again, and, according to His custom, He once more began to teach them.2 Some Pharisees came up to Jesus, testing Him, and began to question Him whether it was lawful for a man to divorce a wife.3 And He answered and said to them, What did Moses command you?4 They said, Moses permitted a man TO WRITE A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY.5 But Jesus said to them, Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment.6 But from the beginning of creation, God MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE.7 FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER,8 AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH; so they are no longer two, but one flesh.9 What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.10 In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again.11 And He said to them, Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her;12 and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery.13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.15 Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.16 And He took them in His arms and began blessing them, laying His hands on them.17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?18 And Jesus said to him, Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.19 You know the commandments, DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.20 And he said to Him, Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.23 And Jesus, looking around, said to His disciples, How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!24 The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.26 They were even more astonished and said to Him, Then who can be saved?27 Looking at them, Jesus said, With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.28 Peter began to say to Him, Behold, we have left everything and followed You.29 Jesus said, Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospels sake,30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.31 But many who are first will be last, and the last, first.32 They were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him,33 saying, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will hand Him over to the Gentiles.34 They will mock Him and spit on Him, and scourge Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.35 James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus, saying, Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.36 And He said to them, What do you want Me to do for you?37 They said to Him, Grant that we may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.38 But Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?39 They said to Him, We are able. And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized.40 But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.41 Hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John.42 Calling them to Himself, Jesus said to them, You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them.43 But it is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant;44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all.45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.46 Then they came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!48 Many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me!49 And Jesus stopped and said, Call him here. So they called the blind man, saying to him, Take courage, stand up! He is calling for you.50 Throwing aside his cloak, he jumped up and came to Jesus.51 And answering him, Jesus said, What do you want Me to do for you? And the blind man said to Him, Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!52 And Jesus said to him, Go; your faith has made you well. Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
John 5 (NASB)
1 After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porticoes.3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters;4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.]5 A man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, Do you wish to get well?7 The sick man answered Him, Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.8 Jesus said to him, Get up, pick up your pallet and walk.9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.10 So the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, It is the Sabbath, and it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.11 But he answered them, He who made me well was the one who said to me, Pick up your pallet and walk.12 They asked him, Who is the man who said to you, Pick up your pallet and walk?13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.16 For this reason the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.17 But He answered them, My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.20 For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him greater works than these, so that you will marvel.21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.24 Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.25 Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man.28 Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.30 I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.31 If I alone testify about Myself, My testimony is not true.32 There is another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.33 You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.34 But the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.35 He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.36 But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for the works which the Father has given Me to accomplish--the very works that I do--testify about Me, that the Father has sent Me.37 And the Father who sent Me, He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.38 You do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent.39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me;40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life.41 I do not receive glory from men;42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.43 I have come in My Fathers name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and you do not seek the glory that is from the one and only God?45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope.46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?
Romans 5 (NASB)
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance;4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification.17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.19 For as through the one mans disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
