"Which Jesus?"
Sermon Series: "They Just Don't Get It"
Matthew 21 (NASB)
1 When they had approached Jerusalem and had come to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,2 saying to them, Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me.3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, The Lord has need of them, and immediately he will send them.4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:5 SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.6 The disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them,7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their coats on them; and He sat on the coats.8 Most of the crowd spread their coats in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.9 The crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!10 When He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this?11 And the crowds were saying, This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.12 And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves.13 And He said to them, It is written, MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER; but you are making it a ROBBERS DEN.14 And the blind and the lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed them.15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done, and the children who were shouting in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David, they became indignant16 and said to Him, Do You hear what these children are saying? And Jesus said to them, Yes; have you never read, OUT OF THE MOUTH OF INFANTS AND NURSING BABIES YOU HAVE PREPARED PRAISE FOR YOURSELF?17 And He left them and went out of the city to Bethany, and spent the night there.18 Now in the morning, when He was returning to the city, He became hungry.19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it except leaves only; and He said to it, No longer shall there ever be any fruit from you. And at once the fig tree withered.20 Seeing this, the disciples were amazed and asked, How did the fig tree wither all at once?21 And Jesus answered and said to them, Truly I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and cast into the sea, it will happen.22 And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.23 When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?24 Jesus said to them, I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.25 The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men? And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, He will say to us, Then why did you not believe him?26 But if we say, From men, we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.27 And answering Jesus, they said, We do not know. He also said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.28 But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, Son, go work today in the vineyard.29 And he answered, I will not; but afterward he regretted it and went.30 The man came to the second and said the same thing; and he answered, I will, sir; but he did not go.31 Which of the two did the will of his father? They said, The first. Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you.32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe him.33 Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who PLANTED A VINEYARD AND PUT A WALL AROUND IT AND DUG A WINE PRESS IN IT, AND BUILT A TOWER, and rented it out to vine-growers and went on a journey.34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his slaves to the vine-growers to receive his produce.35 The vine-growers took his slaves and beat one, and killed another, and stoned a third.36 Again he sent another group of slaves larger than the first; and they did the same thing to them.37 But afterward he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son.38 But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.39 They took him, and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.40 Therefore when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?41 They said to Him, He will bring those wretches to a wretched end, and will rent out the vineyard to other vine-growers who will pay him the proceeds at the proper seasons.42 Jesus said to them, Did you never read in the Scriptures, THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone; THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES?43 Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it.44 And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His parables, they understood that He was speaking about them.46 When they sought to seize Him, they feared the people, because they considered Him to be a prophet.
John 12 (NASB)
1 Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.2 So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.3 Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.4 But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples, who was intending to betray Him, said,5 Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to poor people?6 Now he said this, not because he was concerned about the poor, but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box, he used to pilfer what was put into it.7 Therefore Jesus said, Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial.8 For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me.9 The large crowd of the Jews then learned that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, whom He raised from the dead.10 But the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death also;11 because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and were believing in Jesus.12 On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel.14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written,15 FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEYS COLT.16 These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.17 So the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him.18 For this reason also the people went and met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign.19 So the Pharisees said to one another, You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.20 Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast;21 these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, Sir, we wish to see Jesus.22 Philip came and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus.23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal.26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.27 Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, Father, save Me from this hour? But for this purpose I came to this hour.28 Father, glorify Your name. Then a voice came out of heaven: I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.29 So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, An angel has spoken to Him.30 Jesus answered and said, This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes.31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.34 The crowd then answered Him, We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?35 So Jesus said to them, For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.37 But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him.38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? AND TO WHOM HAS THE ARM OF THE LORD BEEN REVEALED?39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again,40 HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND PERCEIVE WITH THEIR HEART, AND BE CONVERTED AND I HEAL THEM.41 These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him.42 Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue;43 for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.44 And Jesus cried out and said, He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me.45 He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me.46 I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness.47 If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.48 He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.49 For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.50 I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.
Luke 19 (NASB)
1 He entered Jericho and was passing through.2 And there was a man called by the name of Zaccheus; he was a chief tax collector and he was rich.3 Zaccheus was trying to see who Jesus was, and was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.5 When Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.6 And he hurried and came down and received Him gladly.7 When they saw it, they all began to grumble, saying, He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.8 Zaccheus stopped and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, half of my possessions I will give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will give back four times as much.9 And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham.10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.11 While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.12 So He said, A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.13 And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, Do business with this until I come back.14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, We do not want this man to reign over us.15 When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done.16 The first appeared, saying, Master, your mina has made ten minas more.17 And he said to him, Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.18 The second came, saying, Your mina, master, has made five minas.19 And he said to him also, And you are to be over five cities.20 Another came, saying, Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.22 He said to him, By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?23 Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?24 Then he said to the bystanders, Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.25 And they said to him, Master, he has ten minas already.26 I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.27 But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.28 After He had said these things, He was going on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.29 When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,30 saying, Go into the village ahead of you; there, as you enter, you will find a colt tied on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here.31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you shall say, The Lord has need of it.32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as He had told them.33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the colt?34 They said, The Lord has need of it.35 They brought it to Jesus, and they threw their coats on the colt and put Jesus on it.36 As He was going, they were spreading their coats on the road.37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,38 shouting: BLESSED IS THE KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.40 But Jesus answered, I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out!41 When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,42 saying, If you had known in this day, even you, the things which make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side,44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.45 Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling,46 saying to them, It is written, AND MY HOUSE SHALL BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER, but you have made it a ROBBERS DEN.47 And He was teaching daily in the temple; but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men among the people were trying to destroy Him,48 and they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging on to every word He said.
